Understanding ADHD and How to Support Your Child’s Success at School

Signs of high blood pressure

It’s natural for a child to showcase signs of forgetfulness and short attention spans, but when these issues seem to be causing too much of a disturbance in their home life or school life, it might be time to have our pediatricians at Internal Medicine & Pediatric Clinic evaluate your child for ADD or ADHD. Located in New Albany and Saltillo, our clinic offers you and your child a team of highly experienced pediatricians for comprehensive tests to confirm whether your child is suffering from ADD or ADHD. Should your child be diagnosed with either condition, our team offers the guidance needed to ensure your child has the highest quality of life possible. Schedule your consultation by calling us or online today and learn more about testing for ADD or ADHD.

What is ADHD?

ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, affects a child’s ability to focus, control impulses, and stay still. There are two main types: inattentive (formerly known as ADD) and hyperactive-impulsive. Children with inattentive ADHD may find it difficult to pay attention, follow instructions, or complete tasks. Those with hyperactive-impulsive ADHD may exhibit excessive talking, fidgeting, and impulsivity.

Symptoms of ADHD

Common symptoms of ADHD include:

  • Difficulty following instructions or completing tasks
  • Forgetfulness
  • Lack of attention to details
  • Excessive talking and fidgeting
  • Restlessness and difficulty staying seated
  • Impulsivity and constant interrupting

These symptoms can appear around age 7 but might start at any age. It can be challenging for parents to differentiate between normal hyperactive behavior and behavior requiring medical attention.

Evaluating ADHD at IM&PC

Our pediatricians in New Albany and Saltillo are equipped to comprehensively evaluate your child’s behavior. The evaluation starts with a discussion between you and your child’s pediatrician regarding specific concerns and symptoms. Family and general health history are reviewed to rule out other conditions. The pediatrician may also speak with your child’s teachers and other caregivers to gain a full picture of their behavior.

The Importance of Early ADHD Diagnosis

Early diagnosis of ADHD is crucial for effective intervention and management. Identifying the condition early allows us to create a tailored treatment plan that addresses your child’s specific needs, improving their overall quality of life and academic performance.

Back-to-School Tips for Kids with ADHD

Helping your child transition back to school can be challenging, but with the right strategies, you can set them up for success. Here are some practical tips:

  • Create a Consistent Routine: Establish a daily schedule to provide structure.
  • Organize the Study Space: Create a distraction-free study area at home.
  • Communicate with Teachers: Work closely with school staff to address your child’s needs.
  • Use Visual Aids: Use charts and planners to help your child stay organized.
  • Encourage Breaks: Allow short breaks during study time to help maintain focus.

Creating an ADHD-Friendly Study Environment

A conducive study environment can significantly impact your child’s ability to focus and succeed academically. Here’s how you can set one up:

  • Choose a Quiet Space: Select a location free from distractions.
  • Use Organizational Tools: Utilize calendars, planners, and to-do lists.
  • Maintain a Clean Workspace: Keep the study area tidy and clutter-free.
  • Incorporate Breaks: Allow short, regular breaks to help maintain concentration.

Effective Time Management Strategies

Children with ADHD often struggle with time management. Here are some techniques to help:

  • Set Clear Goals: Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps.
  • Use Timers: Use visual timers to help your child stay on track.
  • Prioritize Tasks: Teach your child to prioritize tasks based on importance and deadlines.
  • Reward Systems: Use positive reinforcement to motivate your child.

Treatment Options for ADHD

If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, our pediatricians will create a custom treatment plan based on their medical history and specific needs. Treatment options may include:

  • Behavioral Therapy: Helps children develop coping mechanisms and social skills.
  • Medication: In some cases, medication may be recommended to manage symptoms.
  • Lifestyle Adjustments: Changes in diet, exercise, and family counseling may be beneficial.
